The Leadership Skill Most of Us Overlook

Balance Isnโ€™t Passive. Itโ€™s an Act of Leadership.

Years ago, in my early 20s, I was part of a demanding leadership program that included a ropes course. One challenge involved climbing a narrow 30-foot pole with a spinning plate at the top.

No ropes to hold. No rails. Just you, gravity, and your heartbeat.

I still remember the moment I rose to my feet. Adrenaline surging. Brain buzzing. Legs trembling. But step by step, turn by turn, I did it. Slowly. Not because I was fearlessโ€”but because I paused.

Between every micro-movement, I paused to breathe. To clear the noise. To reset. That day, I thought I had learned focus. But looking back, I think what I really learned was this:

Pause > Focus > Action In Balance...

The same is true in leadershipโ€”and life.

We talk a lot about drive, hustle, output. There is a time for that. Thereโ€™s a season for urgency, execution, intensity. And when weโ€™re focusedโ€”truly focusedโ€”we can move mountains.

But if the balance tips too far, too long, toward more, faster, nowโ€”we lose the clarity that focus brings. We stop being intentional. We just react.

Balance is not about staying stagnant. Itโ€™s about knowing when to moveโ€”and when to pause. When to doโ€”and when to breathe.

Thatโ€™s not weakness. Thatโ€™s wisdom.

Because if we forget to include space for personal growth, wellness, relationships, and reflectionโ€ฆ not only do we lose our sense of selfโ€”we also lose the capacity for the kind of action that really matters.

So next time you feel the chaos rising, remember the spinning plate. You donโ€™t need to rush. But you do need to notice.

And choose your next step with intention.
